This chapter provides information on the PA-E3 serial port adapter and its use on the

Catalyst RSM/VIP2 in the Catalyst 5000 family switches. This chapter contains the following

Overview

The PA-E3 is used on the Catalyst RSM/VIP2 in the Catalyst 5000 family switches and can be

installed in either port adapter slot 0 or slot 1 on the Catalyst RSM/VIP2 motherboard.

Note You can have up to three E3 serial interfaces on a Catalyst RSM/VIP2 motherboard. Cisco

recommends a conﬁguration of one PA-E3 (with one E3 serial interface) and one PA-2E3 (with two

serial interfaces) for a total of three E3 serial interfaces.

Figure 4-1 shows two one-port PA-E3 port adapters installed in port adapter slot 0 and slot 1, on a

Catalyst RSM/VIP2-40.
